The BBC's Culture Show has launched a quest to discover who the Great British public consider to be the greatest British cultural icon alive today.
The candidate must:
- Be living
- Have been born in the UK or living in the UK
- Have made an impact on British cultural life.
Other considerations:
- If your icon died tomorrow, would they make front page news?
- Has your icon made a cultural impact beyond their personal skills or field of work?
- Will their name be recognised by young and old alike?
- Will we still be talking about them in 10 years' time?
I've nominated Stephen Fry. I have always admired the man for his wit and intelligence and more recently for raising awareness about bipolar disorder (manic-depression, whichever you prefer) and opening up about the effect it's had on his life. He's always suffered from this in silence, but I guess felt that the time was right to talk about it - good for him. I'm sure it's helped a lot of other sufferers.
I also love his novels. Just finished reading The Liar. He's a very funny man.
I'm sure there are better-known candidates who will surely beat him to the top spot in this poll, but I'd like to see him in the running. For me personally, he's changed the way I look at certain things and I'm sure I'm speaking for a lot of people.
Who would you nominate?

I would trust your decision and vote Stephen Fry...I don't know enuff about British culture (sadly)...barely know enuff about Canadian (double sadly)
Hope you are well.
