Living Icon

by Miss_Understood @ 2006-10-28 - 22:44:22

The BBC's Culture Show has launched a quest to discover who the Great British public consider to be the greatest British cultural icon alive today.

The candidate must:

- Be living
- Have been born in the UK or living in the UK
- Have made an impact on British cultural life.

Other considerations:

- If your icon died tomorrow, would they make front page news?
- Has your icon made a cultural impact beyond their personal skills or field of work?
- Will their name be recognised by young and old alike?
- Will we still be talking about them in 10 years' time?

I've nominated Stephen Fry. I have always admired the man for his wit and intelligence and more recently for raising awareness about bipolar disorder (manic-depression, whichever you prefer) and opening up about the effect it's had on his life. He's always suffered from this in silence, but I guess felt that the time was right to talk about it - good for him. I'm sure it's helped a lot of other sufferers.

I also love his novels. Just finished reading The Liar. He's a very funny man.

I'm sure there are better-known candidates who will surely beat him to the top spot in this poll, but I'd like to see him in the running. For me personally, he's changed the way I look at certain things and I'm sure I'm speaking for a lot of people.

Who would you nominate?

Hope you are well.

Hey. You'd do well to agree with my decision, hehe. (o:

I am well(ish) thank you, just getting over migraine no. 5244502

Bleurgh.

*puts eye mask back on*

I would have said Spike Milligan if you'd have asked me a few years back. I believe he was also bi-polar btw.

Comedians often are. You can't have Spike as he's dead. Choose someone else (can't be yourself!)

I've never thought of reading a Fry book. I don't know why, I really enjoy him in QI. He certainly is very funny indeed. But seeing as I'm looking for a new book to read I may pass by my normal authors and grab a copy of The Liar.

As for Living Icon,

I really want to say Thom Yorke, not only did his music change my life when I was younger, but now his views, debates and his voicing of the problems with Climate Change. Huge icon to me.

But I think I'd be stuck, between David Attenborough, Im sure his documentaries are watched, educated and loved by lots of people.
And Stephen Hawking. Although he wrote many great books which are forward thinking in science, the greatest thing he done was to show that disabilites that take away everything you have, can be overcome.

But I think Stephen Hawking would slightly be more of an culture icon, and more recongnizable.

Yup I'd agree with those - looks like Attenborough is a favourite on the message boards though.

Thom Yorke's more of a personal icon - in my eyes too! BulletproooOOooooOOooooOOOoooof. |-|

Btw, try Moab Is My Washpot - Stephen Fry's autobiography ;)

He is? Oh well I was close. Id still stick with Hawking as Great British Public Icon.

But secretly Id want Yorke to win ;)

Mine would be Big Rita from the Paul O'Grady. Shes a legend in her own Deirdre Barlow glasses. No one better...

Well apart from Stephen Fry. IQ all the way. I'll have a think. Rick Astley maybe...

I had the pleasure of attending an awards cermony hosted by Stephen Fry and he was brilliant almost made up for the crap food, expensive drink and the fact I never won nothing!

But I'd nominate Lemmy, because he is still alive!
